GenFlix cookies & tracking.

1. The philosophy: measuring the signal

At GenFlix, we do not use cookies to chase you around the internet with ads. We use technology to measure the integrity of the cinema experience.

To maintain The Index (our global ranking of AI cinema), we must accurately measure how films are watched. We track “retention curves”, where viewers pause, rewind, or stop watching. This data is the heartbeat of our ecosystem; it determines which films are promoted and which creators receive the GenFlix Grant.

By using GenFlix, you agree that your viewership is part of this collective intelligence.

2. How we use technologies

We use Cookies, LocalStorage, and Session Tokens to ensure the Studio is secure and the Cinema is accurate. We categorise them into three “Lanes”:

Lane 1: essential (the infrastructure)

These are necessary for the website to function. You cannot switch these off.

  • Authentication: We use Firebase to verify your identity when you log into the Studio. It ensures that when you upload a film, it is attributed to you.
  • Security: We use tokens to prevent “Cross-Site Request Forgery” (CSRF) and to protect your account from unauthorised access.
  • Load Balancing: We use cookies to distribute traffic across our global servers so the video stream remains stable.

Lane 2: The Index (performance & integrity)

These technologies allow us to calculate the GenFlix Certification Index (GCI) score and keep The Index accurate.

  • The Voting Token: When you vote on a film or view a premiere, we store an anonymous identifier in your browser's LocalStorage. This prevents “ballot stuffing” (bots voting multiple times) and protects the integrity of the GenFlix Grant.
  • The Projector: Our video player logs technical events (buffering, bitrate shifts, play/pause). We use this to diagnose stream quality and to tell the creator if their file is too heavy for certain devices.

Lane 3: analytics (the aggregate)

Audience Behaviour: We aggregate data to understand global trends (e.g., “Viewers in Japan prefer Sci-Fi”). This data is anonymised and does not identify you personally.

3. Third-party processors

We build on top of enterprise-grade infrastructure. You may encounter cookies from our core providers:

  • Google / Firebase: For identity management and hosting.
  • Stripe: (Future) If/when we introduce payments, Stripe will place cookies to detect fraud and process transactions securely.

4. Managing your choices

You have control over your digital footprint.

  • Browser Settings: You can block cookies via your browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge) settings.

The impact: Please note that if you block Essential or Index cookies:

  • You may be unable to log into The Studio.
  • Your views will not count toward The Index. This means the filmmakers you watch will not receive credit (or potential Grant funding) for your viewership.
